Village of Wilmette advises to:

Put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.

Drivers should slow down and be especially alert; children are excited and may move in unpredictable ways.

For residents passing out treats, please leave your porch light on during the Trick-or-Treat hours.

LOCAL NEWS

Chaos at O'Hare as Planes Crash into Luggage Cart, Passengers Unscathed

On Thursday night, planes collided with a baggage cart while taxiing at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, according to city fire officials. The officials reported that none of the passengers or crew on the two planes involved were harmed. It seems the collision occurred as the aircraft were moving to their gates, though the exact circumstances are unclear. At this time, the extent of any damage to the planes is unknown. Chicago authorities have not yet indicated whether flight operations at O'Hare were disrupted by the event.

Breaking Barriers: Nicole Fernandez to Lead Highland Park Hospital as First Female President in 2024

Nicole Fernandez, a nursing assistant at NorthShore hospitals, is set to become the president of Highland Park Hospital in January 2024. This move is part of a series of leadership changes at NorthShore—Edward-Elmhurst health which includes promoting three women to hospital president positions - a rarity in the healthcare management industry.

Gabrielle Cummings will become the president of Evanston Hospital, while still overseeing all nine NorthShore—Edward-Elmhurst hospitals. Dave Rahija, the president of Skokie Hospital, and Jesse Peterson Hall, the president of Glenbrook Hospital, are due for retirement in 2024, and their roles will be assumed by Gus Granalchek and Maria Knecht respectively.

With these changes, six out of nine NorthShore—Edward-Elmhurst hospital presidents will be women. The organization credits this to its strong mentoring program and focus on promoting care workers, who are predominantly women.

CRIME

FBI Implicated in Highland Park Parade Tragedy: Bobby Crimo Raises Unsubstantiated Claims

Bobby Crimo, the accused shooter in the Highland Park parade tragedy, claims in a recorded jailhouse video call that the massacre was a government "false flag operation." Awaiting trial on numerous felony charges, Crimo alleges the July 4, 2022 shooting was orchestrated by authorities. He is accused of firing from a downtown rooftop into the parade, killing 7 and injuring many more. Though he allegedly confessed, Crimo now says in the video the confession was coerced through torture, and he was forced to falsify evidence.

The 37-second video was recorded and posted online by a self-identified nurse and investigative journalist. In it, Crimo names two purported FBI agents he says had significant roles in the "operation." The woman presents an elaborate conspiracy theory involving the founder of a graphic website operating an "FBI honeypot" per a plea deal. Crimo was a member of the site, and the theory suggests he was manipulated into becoming a patsy, with multiple shooters including FBI agents carrying out the attack.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office found Crimo didn't violate jail rules, but banned the woman who recorded the video from further calls. Prosecutors are aware of the video but declined comment, as did Crimo's court-appointed attorneys and the FBI. It's unclear if his defense will claim he was brainwashed into being a government scapegoat. No motive has been publicly revealed, fueling online speculation and hoaxes.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene suggested on Facebook the shooting was designed to push gun control. Conspiracy theories have led to consequences, like Alex Jones' Sandy Hook defamation settlement, but Crimo's case remains pending. He has a December court date where a 2024 trial date may be set. His father, who authorized his gun license, also faces charges.

TODAY IS NATIONAL FRANKENSTEIN FRIDAY DAY

Every year, the last Friday in October is celebrated as National Frankenstein Friday to honor the legacy of author Mary Shelley and her legendary 1818 Gothic novel, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Shelley originally published the book anonymously, keeping the author's identity a mystery.

The classic tale focuses on the doomed experiments of scientist Victor Frankenstein, who manages to create life by assembling a sentient creature from corpses. Although never named in the original book, this monster with the flat head, bolts in his neck and greenish skin has become ingrained in pop culture as one of the most recognizable horror icons of all time.

Even though the creature was meant to be intelligent and thoughtful in Shelley's novel, adaptations over the decades have cemented the image of the monster as a lumbering, inarticulate fiend. Regardless, the story of dangerous science conducted without regard for consequences continues to thrill and caution readers almost 200 years later. On Frankenstein Friday, fans celebrate Shelley's enormous contribution to horror and science fiction literature by revisiting the book, watching classic film versions, examining the impact of the "Frankenstein" mythos or simply appreciating the creations she set loose on the world.

BEARS

Breakout Star Jaylon Johnson Awaits Contract Extension as Bears Approach Trade Deadline

Bears' cornerback Jaylon Johnson, having recently delivered his best career game, is expecting a new contract extension, with the trade deadline serving as the cut-off for negotiations. Johnson, in his final year of his rookie agreement, expressed his desire for security and respect in a new contract without specifying financial details. While he said that contract discussions have moved slower than anticipated, he reiterated that he isn't feeling stressed about it and sleeps well. His health remains good, while teammate Eddie Jackson's foot injury and Jaquan Brisker's illness have affected the team.

BULLS

Chicago Bulls Secure DeRozan's Contract Extension and Bolster Roster for Playoff Push

The Chicago Bulls' management seems inclined to solidify their core by extending standout player DeMar DeRozan's contract. They prioritize depth and stability over a rebuild. With Lonzo Ball's knee issues, the Bulls aim to fill the gap with signings of Ayo Dosunmu, Coby White, and experienced player Jevon Carter. The team's playoff aspirations depend on the performance, health, and synergy of their big three - DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Nikola Vucevic.

Analyst Mark Medina suggests retaining the 34-year-old All-Star and augmenting the lineup with quality role players for a more strategic move. The Bulls' choice to extend DeRozan's contract strengthens their core and asserts their contender status in the Eastern Conference. The addition of veteran Jevon Carter brings experience and leadership, while rookies Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White show potential for growth.

Despite criticism for not embracing a full rebuild, the Bulls believe in their roster and aim for a playoff push, relying on the performance and health of their star players. LaVine, Vucevic, and DeRozan's chemistry will be crucial.
