Daylight Saving Time Ends November 5: Clocks Fall Back 1 Hour

- We will "fall back" and set clocks back 1 hour on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 2am.

- The mnemonic "spring forward, fall back" helps remind us which way to shift the clocks.

- Arizona and Hawaii do not observe DST, along with several US territories.

- The correct term is "Daylight Saving Time" (not "Daylight Savings Time").

- The rationale is to shift daylight hours to better match most people's awake/sleep schedule.

- Whether DST achieves energy savings is debated, as is its impact on health and safety.

- The US Senate passed a bill to make DST permanent nationwide, but it still needs House and Presidential approval.

- Permanent DST would mean no more clock changes after November 2023, with later sunrises and sunsets year-round.

- The impacts of permanent DST on sleep, health, safety, energy use, etc. are complex and debated by experts.

Landmarks Illinois Advocates for Gillson Park's Nomination to the National Register of Historic Places

The nomination of Gillson Park for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places by Landmarks Illinois has sparked national attention. The proposal is now under consideration by the federal institution, which has a window of 45 days to make a decision. Landmarks Illinois will host a virtual meeting to shed more light on the nomination process and the park's significance.

The park, spanning 60 acres, boasts a range of features including beaches, a wildflower garden, performing arts venue, walking paths, tennis courts, and more. Originally known as Washington Park, it was renamed Gillson Park in 1937 after Louis Gillson, the inaugural president of the Wilmette Park Board of Commissioners. The park has evolved significantly since its initial acquisition by the Wilmette Park District in 1911.

Landmarks Illinois' advocacy manager, Kendra Parzen, emphasized the historical and cultural value of Gillson Park. She cited its intact historical design and interesting past as key reasons why it's cherished by the local community. The anticipated listing on the National Register is expected to act as a guiding tool for future modifications, ensuring the preservation of Gillson Park's unique aspects.

Today Is National Sandwich Day

🤭 Yes, there actually is a National Day that honors sandwiches, everyone’s favorite lunchtime food.

#Celebrate the sandwich on November 3rd

  • National Sandwich Day is celebrated on November 3rd, recognizing one of America's favorite lunch items, the sandwich.

  • The day is believed to bear the namesake of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who is credited with the invention of the sandwich.

  • There's a popular myth that Montagu invented the sandwich to sustain himself at the gambling table, ordering slices of meat placed between two slices of bread, a practice that his gambling friends began to emulate.

  • However, N.A.M. Rodger, the author of Montagu's biography, suggests that Montagu likely consumed the first sandwich at his work desk due to his commitments to the navy, politics, and the arts.

  • Before being known as sandwiches, this food configuration was simply referred to as bread and meat or bread and cheese.

  • The origins of National Sandwich Day are still being researched but it's noteworthy that John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, was born on November 3, 1718.

NEW TRIER VOLLEYBALL

New Trier Triumphs in Tension-Filled Sectional Championship, Prepares for Showdown with Benet Academy

In a volleyball showdown that kept spectators and coaches on the edge of their seats, New Trier emerged victorious over Glenbrook South in the sectional championship. The match was marked by dramatic reversals of fortune, with New Trier overcoming a seven-point disadvantage in the third set to clinch the title on November 1 in Glenview. The sectional championship win was an intense 26-24, 24-26, 27-25 battle that will be long remembered by all involved. Despite an early lead by the Titans in the decisive set, the Trevians rallied from a 16-9 deficit, eventually securing a match point with a 24-22 lead.

Junior outside hitter, KitKat McGregor, played a pivotal role in the Trevians' comeback victory with five significant kills in the final set. Even amidst the high-pressure environment, McGregor managed to keep a positive mindset, contributing to what she calls their "craziest win." Ana Vetter, a Wake Forest commit, was another standout player, yielding a match-high of 18 kills. This success marks New Trier's 14th consecutive win and their first three-set match since October 6. The team now prepares for the Bartlett Super-sectional against Benet Academy at 7 p.m. on November 3, aiming to continue their winning streak.

BEARS

Preparation and Strategy: Building a Resilient Team for the Season

In his second professional football outing, Tyson Bagent managed to complete 25 out of 37 attempted passes, resulting in a total of 232 yards. However, he also threw a pair of interceptions, with the first being on a pass meant for DJ Moore. Despite the interceptions, Coach Getsy expressed satisfaction with Bagent's performance, praising him for his resilience and ability to rebound after the pick. The coach stressed the importance of repetition and ensuring that all types of reps are done in a game-like environment, in preparation for matches in noisy stadiums like the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Rookie cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, a second-round pick from Miami, has demonstrated steady improvement throughout the season. Despite being penalized five times, Stevenson has started in all eight games, recording 49 tackles and five pass breakups. Coach Hoke acknowledged the rookie's progression and explained that while Johnson is considered the team's top cornerback, he isn't tasked with shadowing the opponents' key receivers. Hoke notes this is due to the changing strategies in offensive plays.

Lastly, the Bears are gearing up to face Rashid Shaheed, who currently leads the NFL in punt returns. Coach Hightower recognizes Shaheed's skill and elusiveness, making him a formidable opponent.
