Winnetka's Centennial Tribute: Honoring Sebastian Hinton and the Jungle Gym Phenomenon
The inception of the beloved childhood fixture, the jungle gym, traces back to 1923 and a former resident of Winnetka, Sebastian Hinton. This structure, fondly etched in the memories of countless individuals, was patented by Hinton as a "climbing gym," a creation sparked by his own childhood in Japan. His mathematician father had built a cube framework made of bamboo in their backyard to teach his children about three-dimensional shapes. However, Hinton and his siblings spent most of their time climbing it, a joy Hinton wished to recreate for his own children back in Winnetka.
Hinton's idea caught the attention of Carleton Washburne, the then Superintendent of Winnetka Schools, during a dinner party at the residence of Edward Yeoman, a former Winnetka School Board member. Intrigued, Washburne and Perry Dunlap Smith, the headmaster of North Shore Country Day School, took it upon themselves to draft a prototype of Hinton's gym. This early version found its way to North Shore Country Day School for testing and improvements. Hinton, sadly, didn't live to see his idea bear fruit, succumbing to mental illness in April 1923. His legacy, however, continues to live on. The jungle gym, after several relocations, now resides at the Winnetka Historical Society, testament to Hinton's innovative spirit and the progressive educational movement of his time.
New Trier Township Schools in Focus: A Comprehensive Examination of Illinois School Ratings
The Illinois State Board of Education's annual Illinois Report Card ratings have been released, offering insights into the performance of North Shore Schools. Evanston/Skokie School District 65, which operates 16 schools, saw the majority secure a commendable rating. Notably, Haven Middle School received this rating for the first time since 2020, after previously being classified as underperforming in 2022. Orrington Elementary School was a standout, achieving an exemplary rating. Willard Elementary, however, saw a dip in its rating from exemplary to commendable since last year. The only school in District 202, Evanston Township High School, retained its commendable rating from the previous year.
Winnetka School District 36, on the other hand, saw all its five schools achieve either exemplary or commendable ratings. Schools receiving the exemplary rating included Crow Island and Hubbard Woods elementary schools and the Skokie School, while Carleton W. Washburne School and Greeley Elementary School were deemed commendable. Despite the commendable rating of New Trier Township High School, a decline from the 2022 exemplary rating, the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Peter Tragos, remains optimistic, citing high academic performance despite a high chronic absenteeism rate at 31%. District 39 in Wilmette saw half its schools receive exemplary ratings, with the remaining classified as commendable. Romona Elementary School, however, fell from exemplary to commendable despite recently receiving the Exemplary High Performing School accolade by the U.S. Department of Education. Finally, Glencoe District 35 maintained its commendable grades from last year across all its three schools.

Trevians Triumph in Class 3A State Championship: O'Neill Leads the Charge with Exemplary Performance
Kevin O'Neill, Northwestern's newest recruit, was instrumental in leading the Trevians to their third state title in history. O'Neill, who was the highest scorer for the Trevians, left a significant mark in their 3-1 triumph over Lyons in the Class 3A state championship. This victory not only brought the Trevians back to the state since their last appearance in 2009 but also fulfilled O'Neill's long-cherished dream of contributing to this program and winning a state championship. Other standout performers included Vichnick, a promising midfielder set to join Carleton, and Myers, a committed defender heading to Bowdoin.
The Trevians displayed exceptional teamwork and focus during both state games. They started by settling scores with Glenbrook North, who had handed them their only defeat of the season, and then took control against Lyons, who had snapped Naperville North's 25-game unbeaten run. Vichnick set the game's tone, taking a pass from junior midfielder Gabe Yoder and scoring a 30-yard shot. Minutes later, O'Neill capitalized on a counterattack to secure a 2-0 lead for the Trevians. The youngest of the four Farina brothers, who all played for New Trier, made an impressive 70-yard run to boost the score to 3-0. The team's cohesive efforts led to a memorable victory, an experience O'Neill said he would cherish for the rest of his life.

Bagent Likely to Start Again for Bears with Fields Still Recovering from Thumb Injury
Justin Fields is still recovering from a thumb injury, so rookie QB Tyson Bagent will likely start again for the Chicago Bears tonight against the Carolina Panthers. This will be Bagent's fourth straight start filling in for Fields, who dislocated his thumb in Week 6. Fields has been practicing but is still not 100% and was listed as doubtful for Thursday's game. Head coach Matt Eberflus said Fields is improving but the short week makes it tough for him to be ready in time. Bagent has shown promise filling in, including a big win over the Raiders, but he's also had 8 turnovers in his 3 starts. The Bears hope Fields can return next week, but Eberflus isn't ruling out Fields potentially playing tonight if he gets medical clearance. For now, it looks like Bagent will start again as Fields continues to recover from the thumb injury.
Spread Holiday Cheer with Caring Neighbors
The Caring Neighbors program at New Trier Township has long provided gifts to local families facing financial hardship during the holidays. For years, our generous community members have stepped up to sponsor a neighbor in need.
While parents rarely submit their own wish lists, sponsors often include gift cards for the parents as well. The program keeps both donors and recipients confidential. To protect privacy, township staff distribute the gifts during private appointments with the families.
How You Can Help: Township staff identify and qualify families in need of holiday gifts for their children. The families submit wish lists with items their children would enjoy and make good use of. Donors then sponsor a family and purchase age-appropriate gifts for the children.
To learn more about sponsoring a local family this holiday season, please contact Jeanne Winsted Rosser at (847) 446-8201 or [email protected]. Your generosity will spread holiday cheer to our neighbors in need.
