Derailment Injures 16 on Chicago Transit Authority Yellow Line

A Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Yellow Line train derailed at the Howard Street switching station this morning, according to Chicago Fire Department officials. The derailment occurred around 11 AM and involved a collision between the train and a snow removal vehicle.

The accident left three people seriously injured and at least 16 others hospitalized for crash-related injuries. Fifteen ambulances were dispatched to transport victims. The derailment prompted road closures on Chicago Avenue between South Boulevard and Howard Street.

CTA suspended Yellow Line service and cut power to Red and Purple line trains in Evanston while first responders aided passengers and crew. Red Line trains were also halted between Howard and Thorndale stations.

CTA recommended travelers use bus routes or other rail lines while Yellow and Purple Line service remains suspended. Transit officials say they are working to restore service as quickly as possible and apologized for the disruption.

Highland Park Shooting Suspect's Father Stirs Outrage with Provocative T-Shirt

On Wednesday, Robert Crimo Jr., the father of the accused Highland Park parade shooter, arrived at a Lake County courthouse wearing a T-shirt that read "I'm a political pawn" on the front. This prompted the judge to threaten contempt if Crimo broke decorum rules again. Crimo had turned the shirt inside out before entering the courtroom, but the judge still admonished him as the shirt flouted rules.

The incident underscored tensions around the highly publicized case and the real suffering of victims, while Crimo Jr. faces charges himself. He ultimately pleaded guilty to reckless conduct, receiving 60 days in jail. His son, the shooting suspect, awaits trial.

Red Cup Rebellion: Starbucks workers hold one-day strike for first union contract

Thousands of unionized Starbucks employees at hundreds of stores will participate in a one-day strike today Thursday, November 16, dubbed the Red Cup Rebellion. The workers are protesting the lack of a first contract despite nearly two years of organizing efforts.

Photo by Burak Güler on Unsplash

The union, Starbucks Workers United, has won elections at 368 stores out of 454 held since the first victory in Buffalo in December 2021. But there are still no contracts for over 9,000 union members. This is the second consecutive year workers are striking on Starbucks' Red Cup Day promotion.

With stores in close proximity, Starbucks can keep unionized locations operating by using non-union staff. But picket lines allow workers to communicate their grievances to sympathetic customers. The union filed an unfair labor practice charge regarding Starbucks' refusal to bargain around promotions that spur understaffed stores.

Starbucks blames the union for slow progress but remains open to in-person negotiations. The union insists the company obstructs agreements. One-day strikes have become key for unions to demonstrate strength, like the recent Kaiser deal. Though contracts remain elusive at Starbucks, limited strikes have achieved deals elsewhere.

Meanwhile, thousands remain striking at casinos and Michigan Blue Cross. And major 2023 expirations loom for Boeing, dockworkers and others. But the labor movement has not seen such activism in decades.

Eye Drops Sold at Major Retailers Recalled Due to Unsanitary Conditions at Manufacturer

Kilitch Healthcare India is voluntarily recalling 27 variants of over-the-counter eye drops that were sold at major retailers such as CVS, Walmart, Target, and Rite Aid. The recall comes after FDA inspectors found unsanitary conditions at the manufacturing facility in India.

The eye drops being recalled include store brand products like CVS Health, Target Up & Up, Rite Aid, Leader, and Rugby. The FDA had initially warned consumers in October about a potential risk of eye infections and vision loss from using 26 of these products.

The unsanitary conditions noted by FDA inspectors included workers not wearing shoes in production areas and data falsification to make products appear safe when they were actually contaminated. The eye drops are supposed to be sterile since they are applied directly to the eyes, bypassing natural body defenses.

The voluntary recall now covers 27 products in total. The manufacturers and retailers have removed the affected products from store shelves and websites. Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled eye drops and can return them to the place of purchase for a refund. No adverse events have been reported to date.

The recalled eye drops were distributed nationwide through wholesalers, retailers, and the distributor Velocity Pharma. The complete list of recalled products with NDC numbers and product details is available on the FDA's website. Consumers experiencing any eye infection symptoms after using these drops should seek medical care promptly. COMPLETE LIST HERE

LaVine Addresses Trade Rumors, Frustrated With Losing But Focused On Playing

The Chicago Bulls came into this NBA season with high hopes of gaining national attention. However, on Tuesday the big story became rumors that the Bulls and Zach LaVine were open to exploring a trade. When asked about it, LaVine said now is not the time to discuss trades, his focus is on playing and winning games.

LaVine acknowledged frustration with the Bulls' losing and lack of progress the last few years. Rumors and speculation often increase when a team is struggling. LaVine has been in Chicago 7 years and maintains he loves playing for the Bulls. His representatives at Klutch Sports talk with the Bulls front office regularly about the business side of basketball and potential trades are not unusual. For now LaVine is excited to play and try to get a win against Orlando.

The 28-year-old LaVine is an elite scorer averaging over 21 points per game this season, despite shooting struggles. There is debate whether he can be the lone star player to lead a team to a championship. LaVine believes he was offered a max contract to be the leader in Chicago, though acknowledges the team is not at a championship level currently. LaVine wants to win and will let his representatives handle trade talks while he focuses on playing.

TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL TOLERANCE DAY

Photo by Sarah Ardin on Unsplash

Today, November 16, is International Day for Tolerance. This day promotes awareness of the dangers of intolerance and the importance of mutual understanding among cultures. Tolerance recognizes universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others. Intolerance involves injustice, discrimination, and marginalization. Ways to counter intolerance include enforcing human rights, educating about tolerance, developing inclusive policies, and using nonviolent action. Individuals can identify intolerance in their own lives by asking themselves how tolerant they are of differences.

On this day, human rights activists, educators, and organizations promote tolerance through education and discussion. The UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize is awarded to honor contributions to tolerance.

To participate, reflect on intolerance in your life, discuss tolerance with others, think of improving tolerance in your community, watch movies like American History X about intolerance, and read books like To Kill a Mockingbird dealing with intolerance. Share on social media: #ENDINTOLERANCE #INTERNATIONALTOLERANCEDAY This day was established in 1996 after the UN's 1995 Year for Tolerance.

Spread Holiday Cheer with Caring Neighbors

The Caring Neighbors program at New Trier Township has long provided gifts to local families facing financial hardship during the holidays. For years, our generous community members have stepped up to sponsor a neighbor in need.

While parents rarely submit their own wish lists, sponsors often include gift cards for the parents as well. The program keeps both donors and recipients confidential. To protect privacy, township staff distribute the gifts during private appointments with the families. How You Can Help: Township staff identify and qualify families in need of holiday gifts for their children. The families submit wish lists with items their children would enjoy and make good use of. Donors then sponsor a family and purchase age-appropriate gifts for the children. To learn more about sponsoring a local family this holiday season, please contact Jeanne Winsted Rosser at (847) 446-8201 or [email protected]. Your generosity will spread holiday cheer to our neighbors in need.
