LOCAL NEWS

Chicago Suburbs Pledge United Front Against Hate Amid Rising Tensions

A coalition of 33 suburbs in the Chicago area issued a joint statement on Thursday condemning acts of hate and emphasizing their commitment to public safety. The representatives said their municipalities collaborate on information sharing, dispatch services, and training. They stated they are more committed than ever to safeguarding their communities and being inclusive, while strongly opposing hate-motivated hostility. The officials said staff will continue working with law enforcement to monitor intelligence and implement safety measures, as the Israel-Gaza conflict has impacted residents and led to concerning rises in anti-Semitic and Islamophobic rhetoric globally. Since October 7, people in Chicago suburbs have been charged with hate crimes related to the conflict. The coalition asked all community members to report suspicious behavior by calling 911. They said that while no specific threats were reported, they understand residents are worried about the widespread hateful language and behavior. They emphasized that protecting public safety remains the top priority and is a shared regional, state, and federal responsibility.

Illinois Lawmaker Petitions Supreme Court to Review Gun Ban

Illinois state Rep. Dan Caulkins recently petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to review the Illinois Supreme Court's decision upholding the state's ban on certain semiautomatic weapons. Caulkins had previously challenged the law in state court.

The gun ban was passed after the Highland Park parade shooting, banning certain semiautomatic guns and large capacity magazines.

The Illinois Supreme Court upheld the law 4-3. Caulkins argues the two justices providing the decisive votes - Liz Rochford and Mary O'Brien - should have recused themselves because they each received $1 million in campaign contributions from Gov. JB Pritzker.

Pritzker gave the contributions from both personal and campaign funds, split to avoid exceeding donation limits. Pritzker dismissed recusal suggestions as "ridiculous."

Caulkins' petition focuses on arguing Rochford and O'Brien failed to properly apply judicial recusal precedent involving campaign donations, creating an appearance of bias.

Caulkins hopes the U.S. Supreme Court will take his case, though he acknowledges the long odds given the high court's large caseload. A federal appeals court also recently upheld the law, expected to be appealed.

TODAY IS NATIONAL BAKLAVA DAY

Today, November 17th, is National Baklava Day! This sweet and flaky layered pastry fills kitchens with an irresistible aroma. While its origins are debated, baklava likely originated from the Turkic peoples of Central Asia. The name "baklava" first appeared in English in 1650.

Baklava features layers of filo dough filled with chopped nuts like walnuts, pecans, pistachios, or almonds. Raisins, dates, prunes, and figs are also commonly used as fillings. Spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves add depth of flavor.

If you've never tried baklava before, today is the perfect day to sample this complex and satisfying dessert. You can try making it yourself at home, though it does take some time and effort to prepare. Or stop by your local bakery to see their baklava specials for the holiday. However you choose to celebrate, share photos and shout-outs on social media with the hashtag #NationalBaklavaDay.

EASY SWEET & SAVORY BAKLAVA RECIPE

Ingredients:

1 package phyllo dough, thawed if frozen

- 1 cup butter, melted

- 1 lb nuts (walnuts, pistachios, or almonds), finely chopped

- 1 tsp cinnamon

- 1 cup sugar

- 1/2 cup water

- 1/2 cup honey

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 9x13 baking dish.

2. Unroll phyllo dough and cut sheets in half to fit dish. Cover phyllo with damp towel to prevent drying out.

3. Brush bottom of dish with some melted butter. Lay 1 sheet phyllo in dish and brush with butter. Repeat layering 4-5 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.

4. Spread half the chopped nuts evenly over the phyllo. Top with 4-5 more buttered layers of phyllo.

5. Spread remaining nuts evenly over phyllo. Top with another 4-5 buttered layers of phyllo.

6. With a sharp knife, cut Baklava into diamonds or squares all the way to the bottom layer.

7. Bake for 30 minutes until golden brown.

8. While baking, combine sugar, cinnamon, water and honey in a saucepan. Simmer for 5 minutes until sugar dissolves.

9. Once Baklava is baked, slowly pour the hot syrup evenly over top. Let cool completely before serving.

Enjoy this easy homemade Baklava! The layered phyllo dough and nuts are sublime.

Spread Holiday Cheer with Caring Neighbors 🎄🕎

The Caring Neighbors program at New Trier Township has long provided gifts to local families facing financial hardship during the holidays. For years, our generous community members have stepped up to sponsor a neighbor in need.

While parents rarely submit their own wish lists, sponsors often include gift cards for the parents as well. The program keeps both donors and recipients confidential. To protect privacy, township staff distribute the gifts during private appointments with the families. How You Can Help: Township staff identify and qualify families in need of holiday gifts for their children. The families submit wish lists with items their children would enjoy and make good use of. Donors then sponsor a family and purchase age-appropriate gifts for the children. To learn more about sponsoring a local family this holiday season, please contact Jeanne Winsted Rosser at (847) 446-8201 or [email protected]. Your generosity will spread holiday cheer to our neighbors in need.
