LOCAL NEWS

Local Homeowners Brace For Property Tax Hikes From Schools, Municipalities

Local property owners across several areas are facing property tax levy increases from various governing bodies and school districts. New Trier High School approved a 6.91% increase to account for new constructions, translating to 5% more for current owners. Winnetka proposed a 1.5% hike to fund new buildings but it won't impact current owners. Wilmette passed a 2.94% raise, costing the average home $88 more annually. Glencoe announced a 5.7% increase, amounting to $105 more per $10,000 in property taxes. Additionally, local elementary school districts, which levy the largest share of taxes, will decide on changes by year's end. These cumulative actions will impact homeowners' financial planning and budgets moving forward.

Community Poetry Event Brings Together Youth and Artists

Madame Zuzu's, a Highland Park cafe, hosted a charity poetry reading on Thursday, November 9th, benefiting Glencoe Youth Services through ticket sales and donations. The event featured students from local high schools such as New Trier, Highland Park, and North Shore Country Day, along with their teachers and volunteers from Glencoe Youth Services' young adult special needs program who shared their poems.

Glencoe Youth Services focuses on engaging local youth in community activities and service projects, encouraging middle and high school students to get involved. The poetry reading provided a platform for young poets to express themselves in a safe yet challenging environment.

The event aimed to connect artists in the community and promote the art of live poetry readings. Michelle Rosenthal, the director of Glencoe Youth Services, highlighted the importance of artists coming together and how it leads to better work.

Madame Zuzu's has been hosting monthly poetry readings for adults, and the youth-centered event has gained popularity, with plans for more in the future. This initiative not only brings the community together but also bridges generations and backgrounds among artists.

For students, this event offered a chance to share their work authentically with their peers and adults, providing a break from the typical classroom writing. It created a welcoming and safe space for students to share their emotions and creativity.

In the post-COVID era, the poetry reading helped students find their voices and regain a sense of normalcy from pre-pandemic times. It also aimed to raise awareness that poetry readings are a routine part of many people's lives and that poetry is a continuously evolving art form.

Overall, this event showcased the power of sharing poetry, building confidence, and fostering a sense of community among artists and the audience.

Mysterious, Antibiotic-Resistant Illness Sickens Dogs Across U.S. States

A mysterious respiratory illness has sickened dogs in several U.S. states and left some dead, prompting veterinarians to encourage caution and limited contact between dogs.

According to reports, the pneumonia-like disease begins with a cough that worsens over time, also showing resistance to antibiotics. In addition to coughing, symptoms like sneezing, nasal/eye discharge, breathing issues and fatigue have been seen, with affected dogs often testing negative for common respiratory diseases.

Officials say dogs likely contract the illness through contact with other dogs, with places like dog parks, kennels and groomers posing higher risk. Vets advise bringing dogs with any symptoms to the vet immediately.

Veterinarians in Oregon, Colorado, New Hampshire, California, Indiana, Illinois, Washington, Idaho, Georgia and Florida have reported matching cases.

While vets want owners to limit dog interactions, they stress not avoiding necessary veterinary care. They also advise keeping dogs updated on vaccines like canine influenza, Bordetella and parainfluenza.

If sick, vets recommend PCR testing to identify the cause (viral/bacterial).

Officials describe three categories of illness seen: chronic mild-moderate tracheobronchitis lasting 6-8+ weeks and minimally/not responsive to antibiotics; chronic pneumonia with minimal/no antibiotic response; acute pneumonia rapidly becoming severe and often having poor outcomes within 24-36 hours.

Owners should contact their vet before exposing their dog to multiple unknown dogs. While cautious, experts clarify owners should exercise caution rather than worry.

Spread Holiday Cheer with Caring Neighbors 🎄🕎

The Caring Neighbors program at New Trier Township has long provided gifts to local families facing financial hardship during the holidays. For years, our generous community members have stepped up to sponsor a neighbor in need.

While parents rarely submit their own wish lists, sponsors often include gift cards for the parents as well. The program keeps both donors and recipients confidential. To protect privacy, township staff distribute the gifts during private appointments with the families. How You Can Help: Township staff identify and qualify families in need of holiday gifts for their children. The families submit wish lists with items their children would enjoy and make good use of. Donors then sponsor a family and purchase age-appropriate gifts for the children. To learn more about sponsoring a local family this holiday season, please contact Jeanne Winsted Rosser at (847) 446-8201 or [email protected]. Your generosity will spread holiday cheer to our neighbors in need.
