WEATHER

A seasonably cold air mass will move into the Chicago area this weekend, leading to highs only reaching the 30s, according to the National Weather Service. After a high near 40 degrees today, Friday, temperatures will drop to around 39 on Saturday and 36 on Sunday. Light snow is possible late Saturday going into Sunday morning. Though totals look minor, the snow combined with below freezing temperatures could result in slippery conditions Sunday morning. It will remain cold early next week as well, with highs only reaching the upper 20s and low 30s Monday through Wednesday. Blustery winds up to 15 mph are also expected on Sunday, contributing to the wintry feel. ❄️

New Trier Girls Bring Flag Football to Life in Inaugural Season

New Trier High School fielded its first ever girls flag football team this fall. The team consisted of 36 players and was hugely popular, attracting lots of interest from students. They finished the season with a 3-4 record, scoring 24 touchdowns over the season. More importantly, the team created an inclusive, supportive, and fun environment where players bonded closely. The culture of good sportsmanship and improving one's skills was emphasized over winning by the coaches. Many players cite the bus rides where they played music and hyped each other up as fond memories. For many players, it was their first time playing flag football, but they quickly fell in love with the sport and the bonds it created. The team is already looking forward to improving next season and building on the foundation they created this inaugural year. With growing interest in girls flag football across Illinois, the future is bright for New Trier's fledgling program.

Today Is the 328th day of 2023 and the 63rd day of Autumn

Today In History November 24th

On November 24th, 1859, Charles Darwin published his theory of natural selection in his seminal work "On the Origin of Species".

Also on this day, in 1932, the FBI opened its Criminological Laboratory, now known as the FBI Crime Lab, in Washington D.C.

In 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald, the man accused of assassinating President John F. Kennedy, was himself fatally shot on live TV by Jack Ruby.

In 1971 an unidentified man known as D.B. Cooper hijacked a plane and parachuted out over Washington state with $200,000, never to be seen again.

On November 24th, 1960, Wilt Chamberlain set an NBA record that still stands by grabbing 55 rebounds in a single game, though his team lost 132-129.

An interesting Dale Carnegie quote: ( It happens to be his heavenly birthday today) "There are always three speeches, for every one you actually gave. The one you practiced, the one you gave and the one you wish you gave."

In 2013, 61% of Americans polled believed JFK's assassination was part of a conspiracy, versus 30% believing Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

Spread Holiday Cheer with Caring Neighbors 🎄🕎

The Caring Neighbors program at New Trier Township has long provided gifts to local families facing financial hardship during the holidays. For years, our generous community members have stepped up to sponsor a neighbor in need.

While parents rarely submit their own wish lists, sponsors often include gift cards for the parents as well. The program keeps both donors and recipients confidential. To protect privacy, township staff distribute the gifts during private appointments with the families. How You Can Help: Township staff identify and qualify families in need of holiday gifts for their children. The families submit wish lists with items their children would enjoy and make good use of. Donors then sponsor a family and purchase age-appropriate gifts for the children. To learn more about sponsoring a local family this holiday season, please contact Jeanne Winsted Rosser at (847) 446-8201 or [email protected]. Your generosity will spread holiday cheer to our neighbors in need.
