LOCAL NEWS

Mixed Reactions Continue to Swirl Around Ryan Field Rezoning and Concert Plans

The decision by the City of Evanston to greenlight concerts at Ryan Field has been met with disappointment by the Village of Wilmette, who voiced concerns about the negative impact on local residents. The Village, which formally objected to the rezoning of Ryan Field, continues to explore options to advocate for their constituents, including the potential for legal action. The likelihood of litigation was already foreseen prior to the council's decision, and it appears that private and public parties may be gearing up to challenge the decision in court.

In contrast, Wilmette resident Ted Marshall, who initially opposed the plans, has come to terms with the outcome. Despite removing his yard sign that objected the decision, Marshall shares that the opposition wasn't in vain and that some good has come from the vocal resistance. Nevertheless, the process has left a sour taste, permanently changing his perspective on Northwestern. Although he won't be leaving because of the decision, Marshall admits that he doesn't foresee himself being a patron at the new Ryan Field.

Chicago and Surrounding Areas Light Up with Dazzling Holiday Displays

As winter's chill sets in, Chicago and its neighboring areas are transforming into luminous wonderlands, inviting locals and visitors to indulge in festive delights. The city's cherished holiday light shows, both outdoor and indoor, are a beacon of seasonal cheer, offering a range of experiences from enchanting garden displays to traditional zoo lights.

Lincoln Park Zoo Shines Bright with Garden-Themed Display Lincoln Park Zoo's beloved ZooLights event is back, this year adding a garden-themed light show to its repertoire. Visitors can journey to the North Pole at the Pepper Family Wildlife Center, meet Santa, and marvel at the holiday tree. A maze of lights, ice carvers, a light tunnel, and a Ferris wheel enhance the experience, alongside a pop-up bar serving up warm drinks and s'mores by the firepit. With free admission on Mondays and special themed nights, ZooLights remains a budget-friendly festive attraction.

Chicago Botanic Garden's Lightscape: A New Path of Enchantment The Chicago Botanic Garden's Lightscape is celebrating its fifth year with a fresh path and new installations, featuring international artists' works paired with music. This approximately 1.3-mile journey through the garden promises an emotional and visual feast, with highlights including the "Electric Ribbon Tunnel" and Jigantics' "Lilies" installations.

Museum of Science and Industry's Christmas Around the World Indoors, the Museum of Science and Industry's Christmas Around the World exhibit offers a global twist, with over 50 trees representing different countries, centered around a four-story Grand Tree. This year, the exhibit delves into the science of snow, complemented by snowflake photography and a (fake) snow experience.

Morton Arboretum's Illumination: A Nature-Infused Light Show The Morton Arboretum's Illumination event invites visitors to a one-mile walk through lit-up trees and installations, including the new "Winter Radiance" display and "Starlit Trail". The reversed pathway offers new vistas and experiences, with ADA-compliant trails ensuring accessibility for all.

Brookfield Zoo's Holiday Magic: 42 Years of Festive Lights Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo returns for its 42nd year, lighting up with over 2 million LED lights and numerous animal-shaped displays. Visitors can enjoy light tunnels, entertainment, and holiday-themed photo opportunities.

Rosemont's Sparkle Light Festival: A Village of Lights Rosemont's Sparkle Light Festival brings to life five villages illuminated with millions of lights, featuring Santa visits, train rides, and an ice-skating rink.

Downtown Chicago's Festive Tree and Millennium Park Celebrations Downtown Chicago joins the festivities with a 45-foot Colorado Blue Spruce tree at Millennium Park, surrounded by an ice rink, holiday art market, and singalong events.

Rockford's Illuminated Anderson Japanese Gardens Rockford's Anderson Japanese Gardens hosts Illuminated, a unique light display set among its serene landscape, complete with food trucks and hot chocolate.

Navy Pier's Light up the Lake: A Winter Wonderland Navy Pier transforms into a winter wonderland with Light up the Lake, featuring an ice rink, artisan market, and free live musical performances.

Indiana's Forest of Lights: A Nature Trail Illuminated For a quieter experience, Indiana's Fair Oaks Farms offers the Forest of Lights, a nature trail adorned with interactive light displays, perfect for a family outing.

Each of these locations provides a unique way to celebrate the holiday season, with dazzling lights and festive activities sure to create lasting memories.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS SCOOP 🏀🏈🏐🏒🏑🏏🥅

Loyola Academy Celebrates Unprecedented Season with Class 8A State Championship

Loyola Academy's football team, under first-year coach Beau Desherow, won the IHSA Class 8A state championship, defeating Lincoln-Way East 25-16. This victory marked their 19th consecutive win and the school's fifth state title, achieving back-to-back championships for the first time. The team's success is attributed to strong defense and strategic preparation, with key contributions from players like Ryan Fitzgerald and Drew MacPherson. The Ramblers have established a dominant presence in Class 8A postseasons since 2011, with a remarkable record over the past four seasons.

Spread Holiday Cheer with Caring Neighbors 🎄🕎

The Caring Neighbors program at New Trier Township has long provided gifts to local families facing financial hardship during the holidays. For years, our generous community members have stepped up to sponsor a neighbor in need.

While parents rarely submit their own wish lists, sponsors often include gift cards for the parents as well. The program keeps both donors and recipients confidential. To protect privacy, township staff distribute the gifts during private appointments with the families. How You Can Help: Township staff identify and qualify families in need of holiday gifts for their children. The families submit wish lists with items their children would enjoy and make good use of. Donors then sponsor a family and purchase age-appropriate gifts for the children. To learn more about sponsoring a local family this holiday season, please contact Jeanne Winsted Rosser at (847) 446-8201 or [email protected]. Your generosity will spread holiday cheer to our neighbors in need.
