Spectacular Aurora Forecasted for Illinois Amid Geomagnetic Storm
Earth is expected to be hit by a potent geomagnetic storm on Thursday, which could trigger an extraordinary display of the northern lights across Illinois early Friday morning and potentially again in the evening. Geomagnetic storm activity is anticipated, and it could facilitate the spectacle of dazzling northern lights as far south as Illinois and other mid-latitude states between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Friday. Predicting aurora is a complex task, and data is still limited, but researchers anticipate that an ethereal exhibition could be visible in the northern third of the country.
The National Weather Service forewarns of cloudy skies in Illinois. Those who plan to go aurora hunting are advised to seek a dark sky with clear views to the north. The Kp index, which represents the intensity of a solar energy burst, is projected to be 7 early Friday, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. This center foresees a slightly lower G2 storm, but a Kp index of this magnitude typically results in aurora displays in mid-latitude states. A Kp index of 5 is anticipated for Friday night.
Glencoe Golf Club's New Clubhouse: A Blend of Prairie Style Design and Community Identity
The Glencoe Village Board Trustees were presented with new plans for the "Prairie-style" clubhouse of the Glencoe Golf Course, on the 16th of November. Spearheaded by the ad hoc committee and FGM Architects, the new blueprint aims for a structure that resonates with the diverse architectural style of Glencoe, according to the committee chairman, Michael LaPorte. The new design proposes a 10,000 square foot building, with an even distribution of indoor and outdoor seating, and social gathering spaces facing the west to capture the setting sun.
Daniel Nicholas from FGM Architects revealed that the architectural design is three months away from completion. The project's goal is to create a structure that is utilized year-round, at all times of the day. The project is jointly financed through a $15 million bond sale approved by voters and a private fundraising body, Friends of the Glencoe Golf Club. With $1 million already raised, the group aims to reach a $5 million target to offset the yearly bond payments, according to Friends President Dale Thomas. The Village Board plans to initiate construction next year, eyeing a mid-2025 opening for the new building.
Celebrating New Trier High School's Distinguished Alumni
New Trier High School announced the 2024 recipients of the Alumni Achievement Awards, an honor that recognizes the remarkable accomplishments of its alumni. This year, eight outstanding individuals will be added to the existing 70 laureates, celebrated at a grand gala in March. The selection process involves a committee consisting of alumni, New Trier staff, and foundation representatives. The nominees are judged on their embodiment of the school's motto: commitment to inquiry, compassion, and service to humanity.
Among the distinguished honorees are Tara Purohit Abrahams, a Class of 1994 graduate, and head of impact at a media firm advocating for women and girls. Sam Barsh, a renowned music producer and songwriter from the Class of 1999, who has made significant contributions to the music industry. Robert Bryant, a Class of 1980 graduate, and a NASA chemist who has earned international recognition for his inventions. Other noteworthy recipients include Jerry Fiddler, the co-founder of software firm Wind River Systems, Donald Katz, the founder of the popular audio platform Audible, and Liesel Pritzker Simmons, co-founder of an impact investment firm. Richard Sherman, a notable orthopedic surgeon and team physician at New Trier High School, and Ellen Spertus, a computer scientist with a focus on gender and technology intersections, were also among the inductees.
Evolution of Wilmette's Liquor Licensing: Al's Meat Market at the Forefront
In a bid to both preserve the community butcher shop and meet the evolving demands of the downtown Wilmette area, a novel concept is taking shape. The team behind the project plans to introduce a bar within Al's Meat Market, an institution that has been a community fixture since it moved to downtown Wilmette in 2001. The proposition, which includes enhancements to the existing butcher business, is viewed as a "tremendous opportunity" and a welcome addition to the area's nightlife scene. The team provided a sample small-bites menu for the bar, featuring items like charcuterie and cheese plates, dips, hush puppies, and meatball sliders.
The concept was met with support from the Village Board, with Trustee Stephen Leonard expressing his advocacy for the idea and the team. However, Trustee Gina Kennedy expressed some reservations, seeking more data on public safety in the area. In response, Braiman and Stein pointed out that the police had received only six nighttime calls near establishments serving alcohol until 1 a.m. in the past year, and only two of those involved patrons of such establishments. The Village staff will now draft an ordinance for a new type of liquor license to support this unique concept, with conditions that the butcher shop remains operational during the day and the bar offers food. The eventual decision by the board will set a precedent for the alcohol-serving establishments in downtown Wilmette.

Spread Holiday Cheer with Caring Neighbors 🎄🕎
The Caring Neighbors program at New Trier Township has long provided gifts to local families facing financial hardship during the holidays. For years, our generous community members have stepped up to sponsor a neighbor in need.
While parents rarely submit their own wish lists, sponsors often include gift cards for the parents as well. The program keeps both donors and recipients confidential. To protect privacy, township staff distribute the gifts during private appointments with the families. How You Can Help: Township staff identify and qualify families in need of holiday gifts for their children. The families submit wish lists with items their children would enjoy and make good use of. Donors then sponsor a family and purchase age-appropriate gifts for the children. To learn more about sponsoring a local family this holiday season, please contact Jeanne Winsted Rosser at (847) 446-8201 or [email protected]. Your generosity will spread holiday cheer to our neighbors in need.
