Google Purges Inactive User Accounts in December

Google is implementing a stringent policy to ensure maximum account security. The tech behemoth declared back in May that dormant accounts that have seen no activity for a two-year period will be permanently deleted, starting from Friday. The policy encompasses a variety of Google services, including Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar, YouTube, and Google Photos.

However, the policy is restricted to personal accounts, leaving school and business accounts unaffected. The primary motive behind this move, according to Ruth Kricheli, Vice President of Product Management at Google's Mountain View office, is to prevent the abuse of inactive accounts by spammers, phishing scams, and account hijacking. An internal study conducted by Google revealed that inactive accounts without two-step verification are ten times more prone to vulnerability. Google users can safeguard their accounts from deletion by logging in and engaging with any of Google's services.

Evanston's Flavored Tobacco Ban: Controversial Yet Necessary?

Despite the controversy and potential economic impact on retailers, Evanston's ban on all forms of flavored tobacco is hailed as a significant step towards public health improvement. The ban targets the deceptive marketing strategies of tobacco companies, which often use vague language to lure unsuspecting consumers, especially the youth, into smoking flavored tobacco. While the ban might not have received unanimous support from council members, Health Director Ike Ogbo and Don Ziegler, the chair of the Evanston Health Advisory Council, stood firm on the ban's necessity.

However, critics of the ban worry about its potential ramifications on local retailers and the emergence of an illegal market. The FDA's crackdown on flavored e-cigarettes in 2020 led to a surge in cheap, disposable products from China, and a similar outcome could be anticipated following this city-wide ban. Moreover, Clyde McLemore of the Lake County Black Lives Matter underscored the ban's potentially discriminatory effects, citing the likelihood of popular menthol cigarettes being sold illegally, leading to "unnecessary contact with law enforcement" and declining revenues for Evanston merchants. Despite these concerns, Ogbo maintains that the ban would yield "large public health benefits with relatively minimum impact on City revenue," considering that most flavored tobacco products are not municipally taxed.

Winnetka Residents Voice Opposition to Controversial Donation Agreement

Residents of Winnetka expressed staunch opposition to the donation agreement proposed by the Ishbia Family Foundation during a recent meeting with park district officials. The donation, initially viewed as a generous offering, came under fire for what many perceive as one-sided terms and conditions. Critics of the arrangement argue that it lacks neutrality, pointing to the contentious appointment of Gregg Seiler of Seiler Consulting as arbiter. Seiler's previous dealings with the Ishbia family have raised eyebrows, with some questioning his capacity to act impartially.

The agreement, which includes provisions for the donation's term length and the arbiter's role, also drew criticism for its "no strings attached" language. This, coupled with concerns about the proposed payment schedule and potential contingent liabilities, has fuelled broad dissatisfaction among the board members and residents alike. The meeting ended without a conclusive decision, with the understanding that further discussions and negotiations are required between park district officials and representatives from the Ishbia Family Foundation.

Spread Holiday Cheer with Caring Neighbors ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿ•Ž

The Caring Neighbors program at New Trier Township has long provided gifts to local families facing financial hardship during the holidays. For years, our generous community members have stepped up to sponsor a neighbor in need.

While parents rarely submit their own wish lists, sponsors often include gift cards for the parents as well. The program keeps both donors and recipients confidential. To protect privacy, township staff distribute the gifts during private appointments with the families. How You Can Help: Township staff identify and qualify families in need of holiday gifts for their children. The families submit wish lists with items their children would enjoy and make good use of. Donors then sponsor a family and purchase age-appropriate gifts for the children. To learn more about sponsoring a local family this holiday season, please contact Jeanne Winsted Rosser at (847) 446-8201 or [email protected]. Your generosity will spread holiday cheer to our neighbors in need.
