Village Embarks on Major Waste Management Overhaul with Lakeshore Recycling Systems

The village of Wilmette is upgrading its waste management system by initiating a new contract with Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS), replacing over 19,000 waste carts. The delivery of new bins for garbage, recycling, and yard waste is ongoing until December 22. Residents are advised to use new LRS carts immediately and leave old carts for collection and recycling. LRS services start on January 2, with a slight delay due to holidays. The new contract, spanning 8 years, was chosen after a competitive bidding process and includes additional waste collection services. Residents can expect an average monthly increase of $6 in refuse collection rates.

Residents Warned as Thieves Target Cars, Homes, and Personal Information

In a series of local incidents, law enforcement agencies from various neighborhoods reported a range of criminal activities:

In Wilmette, a man from Chicago was apprehended for the alleged theft of an unsecured car in October. Additionally, on November 28, a 19-year-old from Chicago was arrested for attempting to steal rose bouquets from Jewel on Green Bay Road. This individual was later discovered hiding under a table in a home on Wood Court. Another report from Wilmette included the theft of an unlocked bicycle outside Jewel in Plaza del Lago.

In Winnetka, there was a report of items stolen overnight from a residence in the 100 block of De Windt Road on November 30.

In Glencoe, a customer reportedly failed to return a vehicle to Mini of Glencoe within the agreed timeframe, prompting the dealership to report it as stolen. Additionally, on November 29, a resident was scammed out of $2,000 after disclosing personal information to a fraudulent caller claiming to be from PayPal.

In Northfield, a resident reported responding to a dubious email about a refund for an unrecognized order, leading to a request for their personal information.

Kenilworth reported no significant activities between December 1-8.

FBI and FCC Issue Warnings on Public Phone Charging Station Risks

The FBI's recent reminder serves as a broad caution for the general public to stay alert, particularly when traveling. This advisory aligns with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)'s message, as the FCC recently updated a blog post to emphasize the dangers of compromised charging ports.

In their warning, the FCC highlighted the potential threats posed by these compromised ports, including the risk of device locking and the theft of personal data and passwords. They also noted instances where criminals have left infected cables at charging stations or even distributed them as promotional gifts, further underscoring the potential hazards associated with public charging alternatives. The agency's advice is straightforward: consumers should carry their own chargers and USB cords and opt for electrical outlets instead of public USB stations.

Northwestern Medicine Expands Gender Designations to Include 'X' for Nonbinary Patients

Northwestern Medicine, headquartered in Chicago, is set to implement a significant change in its electronic medical records by introducing a third sex designation. Starting December 18, this new option, labeled "X", will be available across its 11 hospitals and more than 200 outpatient locations. The addition is designed to accommodate individuals who identify as nonbinary, intersex, or transgender, providing a more inclusive option beyond the traditional "M" (male) and "F" (female) choices.

The move to include the "X" designation is part of Northwestern Medicine's broader initiative to affirm and respect the diverse identities of its patients. This change involved extensive preparation, including updates to information systems, workflow modifications, and staff training sessions led by experts in sexual orientation and gender identity. The initiative reflects the healthcare provider's commitment to enhancing patient communication, aligning with best practices, and addressing the specific needs of a diverse population.

This introduction by Northwestern Medicine precedes similar changes at the state level in Illinois, where the option of an "X" marker on government records, including death and birth certificates, is due to be implemented following a 2019 law. This statewide change is part of a growing trend across the United States, with several states already offering a third gender designation option on state identification cards.

The concept of a third gender designation is also gaining traction at the federal level, with the State Department starting to issue passports with an "X" option. However, this development has led to some political debates and legislative proposals aimed at restricting government documents to traditional binary gender options.
