The Golden Arches Hit A Roadblock In Wilmette This Week

The proposal by McDonald's to open a drive-thru at the empty restaurant site, previously occupied by Baker's Square on Skokie Blvd, was rejected by the Wilmette village board. While some supporters were interested in the potential tax revenue, neighbors expressed concerns about the increased traffic, noise, and emissions that would come with the presence of the iconic fast food chain and its drive-thru lanes. They argued that a McDonald's drive-thru would not align with the character of Wilmette.

Make a Difference This MLK Day: Volunteer for Hands-On Service Projects in Winnetka

On January 15th, The Community House in Winnetka, located at 620 Lincoln Avenue, will be bustling with activity as it hosts the MLK Day of Service. This event, spearheaded by the Volunteer Center with The Warner Institute as the lead sponsor, invites people of varying ages and abilities to engage in numerous hands-on projects. The program, running from 11 AM to 2 PM, does not require reservations or admission fees.

Participants will have a range of projects to choose from. One such project is making no-sew blankets for the homeless. While materials for most projects are provided, those interested in the blanket project are encouraged to bring 4 yards of fleece fabric. A limited number of fleece blanket kits will also be available for purchase on the day. Selecting unique fabric patterns has been a highlight for participants in past years, especially for younger volunteers, as it enhances their involvement in the service activity. Help create dog toys and treats for orphaned animals, cards of support, toiletry kits and our always popular no-sew fleece scarves for the homeless. Other projects include crafting Valentine's cards for hospitalized individuals, Attendees are also invited to donate new socks for the unhoused.

All activities support local nonprofits including Grace Network, Holiday Heroes, Orphans of the Storm, CJE Senior Life and Night Ministry.

Adding to the day's activities, representatives from Orphans of the Storm will be present, potentially bringing along dogs available for adoption.

The Volunteer Center is proud to welcome The Warner Institute as this year's MLK Day Lead Sponsor. The Warner Institute, known for its advanced aesthetic and reconstructive surgery services, is a committed community partner. Dr. Jeremy Warner, honored by the Volunteer Center in 2021 for his charitable work in Nepal, continues to exemplify the spirit of community service.

New to this year's event, Cradles to Crayons will be onsite with a truck to collect donations of new hygiene items, diapers, school supplies, gently used clothing, and books.

The event promises to offer something meaningful for everyone. For more information, inquiries can be directed to The Volunteer Center via their email: [email protected]. Website
