Bitter Cold Creates Hazards For Pets: Safety Tips for Pet Owners

With bitterly cold temperatures and heavy snowfall in the forecast this week, pet owners must take extra steps to protect their furry friends. The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control has issued winter safety reminders to prevent weather-related injuries and keep pets healthy.

Get Pets Inside

All pets should be brought indoors during extreme cold, regardless of their normal outdoor access. Provide a warm, indoor shelter even for pets used to being outside. Prolonged exposure to subzero temperatures can be life-threatening.

Protect Paws

Frigid temperatures and ice-melting salt on sidewalks can damage paw pads. Booties provide the best protection but if unworn, wash paws with warm water after outdoor walks. Keep walks brief - no more than 10 minutes in bitter cold.

Watch for Frostbite

Exposed noses, ears, tails and other extremities are vulnerable to frostbite. If you notice frostbitten skin, contact your veterinarian immediately. Provide ample shelter and limit time outside.

Prevent Wandering

Heavy snowfall masks familiar scents that help pets navigate. Keep dogs leashed on winter walks and ensure collars and microchips are current so lost pets can be easily reunited with owners.

Light Up the Night

Shorter daylight hours mean more nighttime walks. Use reflective gear and leashes and keep pets close while walking along roadways.

Secure Toxins

Antifreeze tastes sweet but is lethal even in tiny ingested amounts. Keep antifreeze bottles sealed and out of paw's reach. Clean spills immediately to prevent accidental poisoning.

Power Outages

Winter storms can cause electrical failures. Have emergency kits prepared with a 5-day supply of food, water and vital pet medications.

If you spot pets left unprotected outside for long periods, notify authorities. Though providing proper outdoor shelter is legally required in some areas, it may be inadequate in extreme cold. Community vigilance can save pet lives.

Iceman Cometh: Chicago's "Great Lake Jumper" Takes Polar Plunge Despite 10 Below Zero Temps

Dan O'Conor has jumped into Lake Michigan every day for over 3 years, continuing his streak even amid dangerously frigid temps dipping to 10 below zero. Braving negative wind chills and 36-degree waters, the artist and clothing company owner takes a "meditative" plunge he says brings him peace of mind. He has become a local celebrity for the jumps, drawing crowds, having bands play, and dedicating dives to lost friends and icons. On Sunday, O'Conor again took the dive at Montrose Harbor, with friends joining him in facing the extreme cold. Though experts advise staying indoors, the "Great Lake Jumper" can't be deterred from his daily ritual. Full Story

Two Cicada Broods to Converge in Illinois for First Time in Over 200 Years

This year, two groups of periodical cicadas, Brood XIII and Brood XIX, will emerge simultaneously for the first time in 221 years. The last convergence occurred in 1803. Most of Brood XIX will appear in southern states, while Brood XIII will primarily emerge in a small section of the Midwest, centered in Illinois. The two broods will overlap around the Chicago area.

Gene Kritsky, a professor and cicada expert, will travel to Illinois in early June along with his wife to map out cicada sightings. He notes that periodical cicadas are often found in suburban areas near mature trees and open spaces like parks and cemeteries. After 13 or 17 years underground, they emerge in late spring when soil temperatures reach approximately 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once out of the ground, the cicadas shed their exoskeletons, mate, and females lay eggs in tree branches. Each female can lay between 400-600 eggs. After six weeks, the eggs hatch and the new nymphs burrow into the earth to repeat the cycle. The adult cicadas die shortly after reproducing.

While periodical cicadas appear by the millions and make loud noises, they are harmless to people and animals. However, their crushed bodies can make roads slippery for drivers. They can also potentially damage young trees when laying eggs.

In recent years, crowdsourcing apps like Cicada Safari have transformed cicada research by allowing citizen scientists to submit photos for tracking. This has led to new discoveries about early and late emergences that may relate to climate change. The apps have also encouraged public excitement around the intriguing insects.

Federal Agency To Prohibit Funny And Quirky Electronic Highway Signs

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has given states two years to implement changes outlined in its new 1100 page manual, including a rule that bans overhead electronic signs with humorous or quirky messages.

Administration officials said such signs can be misunderstood or distracting to drivers. Signs should be "simple, direct, brief, legible and clear" and only display important information like traffic or weather alerts, according to the agency.

Among the prohibited messages are "Use Yah Blinkah" in Massachusetts and "Don't drive Star Spangled Hammered" in Pennsylvania. For seven years, Arizona has held a contest for the funniest and most creative highway signs, drawing over 3,700 entries last year.

Some local transportation departments have utilized humorous signs to connect with drivers. However, the new federal guidelines aim to standardize messaging across states to focus solely on safety and navigation. The rule change has faced some opposition from states that want flexibility with sign wording.
