Bitter Cold Creates Hazards For Pets: Safety Tips for Pet Owners
With bitterly cold temperatures and heavy snowfall in the forecast this week, pet owners must take extra steps to protect their furry friends. The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control has issued winter safety reminders to prevent weather-related injuries and keep pets healthy.
Get Pets Inside - All pets should be brought indoors during extreme cold, regardless of their normal outdoor access. Provide a warm, indoor shelter even for pets used to being outside. Prolonged exposure to subzero temperatures can be life-threatening.
Protect Paws - Frigid temperatures and ice-melting salt on sidewalks can damage paw pads. Booties provide the best protection but if unworn, wash paws with warm water after outdoor walks. Keep walks brief - no more than 10 minutes in bitter cold.
Watch for Frostbite -Exposed noses, ears, tails and other extremities are vulnerable to frostbite. If you notice frostbitten skin, contact your veterinarian immediately. Provide ample shelter and limit time outside.
Prevent Wandering - Heavy snowfall masks familiar scents that help pets navigate. Keep dogs leashed on winter walks and ensure collars and microchips are current so lost pets can be easily reunited with owners.
Light Up the Night - Shorter daylight hours mean more nighttime walks. Use reflective gear and leashes and keep pets close while walking along roadways.
Secure Toxins - Antifreeze tastes sweet but is lethal even in tiny ingested amounts. Keep antifreeze bottles sealed and out of paw's reach. Clean spills immediately to prevent accidental poisoning.
Power Outages -Winter storms can cause electrical failures. Have emergency kits prepared with a 5-day supply of food, water and vital pet medications.
If you spot pets left unprotected outside for long periods, notify authorities. Though providing proper outdoor shelter is legally required in some areas, it may be inadequate in extreme cold. Community vigilance can save pet lives.

Fried Chicken Fans Rejoice as Honey Butter Flies North to Glencoe
A suburban fried chicken paradise has landed as acclaimed Honey Butter Chicken spreads its wings to a second home in Glencoe. Taking over the historic building that formerly housed Poppy's Social, the 4,000-square-foot eatery brings all the crispy, saucy hits that have made the Avondale original a Windy City comfort food darling over the past decade.
Alongside their signature chicken and sandwiches, the homegrown restaurant's chef owners serve up new temptations like charbroiled birds, vegetarian options, artisan pies, and spike-able lemonade slushies. With room to roost for 70 inside the family friendly dining room. The bright and airy space is decorated with modern finishes and vintage finds. Private dining areas and an outdoor patio for warmer weather add to the ambience. Glencoe's new-school chicken shack offers delivery and takeout, perfect for Ravinia and summer picnic feasts too.
For chef owners, Josh Kulp and Christine Cikowski, the suburban expansion births a new era as their OG clutch of chickens comes home to roost, marking Honey Butter’s 10th anniversary.

State Farm, Allstate Lead Massive Car Insurance Rate Increases in Illinois
Illinois drivers experienced a significant hike in car insurance costs last year, with an increase of over $1.25 billion following a $1.1 billion rise in 2022. This surge was highlighted in an analysis by a consumer group focusing on the state's 10 largest auto insurers, which constitute 81% of the market.
Among these insurers, State Farm, based in Bloomington, and Allstate in Northbrook, implemented the most substantial rate hikes, totaling $364 million and $210 million, respectively. These two companies alone cover about 40% of Illinois' auto insurance market.
Allstate attributed the rate increase to a rise in accident recovery costs, citing more traffic, severe accidents, and elevated repair expenses due to inflation. Similarly, State Farm linked their rate adjustments to inflation and supply chain issues, leading to higher costs for labor and materials and, consequently, more expensive auto repairs.
The nonprofit Illinois PIRG Education Fund scrutinized over 300 rate filings, revealing that the premium hikes in 2023 affected more than 5 million policyholders in the state. The organization's Director, Abe Scarr, emphasized the need for standard consumer protections for Illinois car insurance customers, akin to those in other parts of the country.
Illinois currently permits auto insurers to set rates without prior approval, a policy that the consumer group is challenging. State Rep. Will Guzzardi and Sen. Javier Cervantes have proposed legislation to grant the Illinois Department of Insurance more control over rate increases and to prohibit the use of non-driving factors in premium calculations.
Meanwhile, Robert Passmore from the American Property Casualty Insurance Association noted the ongoing challenges of higher repair and medical costs, exacerbated by advanced technology in newer vehicles. This scenario is not unique to Illinois but is a nationwide issue.
Insurance industry representatives argue against increased regulation, claiming that the current system fosters competition and offers consumers the freedom to shop around. They assert that eliminating non-driving factors from rate calculations could lead to less accurate risk assessments and higher costs for some customers.
However, there are strategies for consumers to mitigate these rising costs. Experts suggest using online tools for price comparison, shopping around instead of staying loyal to one insurer, maintaining continuous insurance coverage, bundling different types of insurance for discounts, and exploring options like safe driver discounts, telematics programs, and considering higher deductibles for those with no claims history.
Boeing Stock Sinks as Scathing Report Predicts Failed FAA Safety Audit
A harsh new analyst report from Wells Fargo questions whether Boeing can pass an upcoming Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety audit. This sent Boeing's stock price plunging 8% on Tuesday. The report highlights Boeing's ongoing quality control and engineering issues over multiple years. With more incentive to find problems, the likelihood of a "clean" audit is low.
The FAA inquiry stems from an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 that lost an exterior fuselage panel inflight last week. The FAA asserts this should never have transpired and is probing if Boeing ensured products met approved designs and were operationally safe.
To assist evaluating its quality governance, Boeing has appointed retired Navy Admiral Kirkland Donald to lead an independent review. His team will assess quality programs in Boeing's factories and suppliers, reporting to Boeing's board.
Boeing's CEO David Calhoun acknowledged the company's unspecified "mistake" related to the incident. The FAA has given Boeing 10 days to provide any information on the cause.
With all Boeing 737-9 jets grounded, airlines are canceling over 100 daily flights awaiting FAA clearance. The report observes prior FAA investigations have remained ongoing for months.
The analysis sees certification of the Boeing 737 Max 7 and Max 10 variants facing more examination and political difficulties getting required safety waivers approved. Boeing has faced other recent quality dilemmas grounding 787 Dreamliners and 777 jets as well.
In summary, Boeing is facing intense scrutiny into both its quality control processes and the cause of last week's alarming inflight incident with the 737-9. The company has significant work ahead to satisfy regulators, airlines, and investors.
