Celebrating National Carrot Cake Day with One of America's Favorite Flavors

Today we celebrate the delicious and nutritious carrot cake, which allows us to enjoy dessert and vegetables in one slice! The carrot's natural sweetness likely made it a sought-after sugar substitute in medieval cooking. Over time, cooks transformed the veggie into carrot puddings and eventually the modern carrot cake we know and love.

On this National Carrot Cake Day, consider ordering a freshly-baked carrot cake from Sweet Time Cakery in Northfield to enjoy this classic and wholesome treat. Their cakes feature freshly-grated carrots, perfectly balanced spices, and decadent cream cheese frosting. It's a dessert that almost makes you feel healthy! #NationalCarrotCakeDay

Winnetka Plans Streetscape Improvements for Indian Hill Business District

The Village of Winnetka has started planning efforts to make streetscape enhancements within the Green Bay Road right-of-way in the Indian Hill Business District, similar to recent improvements in the Elm Street Business District. This is a joint project with the Village of Kenilworth for the section of Green Bay Road between Winnetka Avenue in Winnetka and Kenilworth Avenue in Kenilworth.

The goal is to identify opportunities to benefit local businesses, residents, and visitors through improvements related to pedestrian safety, parking, lighting, pavement, furnishings, signage, trees, plantings, and outdoor seating. The result will be a Green Bay Road Streetscape Concept Design Plan to guide future decisions about specific improvements.

Because Green Bay Road is currently under Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) jurisdiction, certain standards must be met and coordination with IDOT is required. The Village is exploring a potential Jurisdictional Transfer agreement to take over ownership and gain more design flexibility.

This spring, concept planning and community engagement will take place. Over the next several years, decisions will be made on jurisdiction and construction documents. Once ready, streetscape construction could begin.

Residents can provide input and receive updates by contacting the Village or subscribing to the weekly newsletter

Man Involved in $400 Million Crypto Hack Released on Bond

A 26-year-old Chicago-area man was recently released on home confinement after being charged for his alleged participation in a sophisticated SIM swap scheme that stole $400 million in cryptocurrency from the failed cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The man, Robert Powell of Highland Park, was ordered by a judge to avoid non-essential internet use and online gambling as conditions of his release.

Powell was arrested last week along with two others - a 24-year-old from Indianapolis and a 23-year-old from Colorado Springs. All three were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for their alleged roles in stealing cryptocurrency by carrying out SIM swap attacks. In these attacks, the defendants allegedly obtained victims' personal information and created fake IDs to convince cell phone carriers to port data from the victims' phones onto devices controlled by the defendants.

Once they had control of the phone numbers, the defendants were allegedly able to bypass two-factor authentication and drain cryptocurrency from victims' virtual currency wallets. The largest alleged theft, totaling over $400 million in cryptocurrency, occurred in November 2022 from an employee of FTX - the failed cryptocurrency exchange owned by now-convicted fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried.

Over the course of two years, the trio allegedly conducted similar SIM swap attacks targeting at least 7 victims across multiple states, stealing millions in cryptocurrency. Powell was released on bond but barred from non-essential internet use as he awaits further court proceedings.
