Public Defender Sues After Being Made To Remove 20-year-old Israeli Army Photo

A two-decades-old photo from when Cook County public defender Debra Gassman volunteered in the Israeli army is at the center of a lawsuit she filed, claiming her constitutional rights were violated. Gassman says her employer wanted her to stop displaying the photo, which shows her holding a weapon. Her attorney says she has had it hanging in her office for years without issue until October 7, the date of a deadly Hamas attack on Israel. Though Gassman initially moved the photo from a public area to her private office after a complaint, her supervisor later took it down and confiscated it. Gassman filed a lawsuit alleging violation of her First Amendment free speech rights against the county and her supervisor. The lawsuit does not seek damages, only the ability to display the photo in her office again. Gassman wants to protect her own rights, having spent her career trying to protect clients' constitutional rights. The case is not yet scheduled for trial, and her attorney says she hopes to resolve it before needing to go before a judge.

Photography Department Receives Largest-Ever Donation at Art Institute of Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago has received a $25 million donation from the Bucksbaum family for its Photography and Media Department, the museum announced this week. The contribution marks the largest-ever philanthropic gift to support photography and media curation at the Art Institute.

The donation will principally fund the launch of a new Bucksbaum Photography Center to house the museum's photography and media collection. Carolyn "Kay" Bucksbaum, a longtime board member who has championed photography at the Art Institute for over 20 years, noted that her family's record gift reflects their devotion to the power of the medium and investing in the department's future leadership.

Museum officials expressed gratitude for the Bucksbaum family's forward-looking commitment to strengthening the Art Institute's photography programming through this transformative philanthropic support. The gift aims to bolster the museum's position as a global leader in the photography field.

Grandparent Scams on the Rise

Scammers are increasingly targeting grandparents in our community with deceptive phone calls and even house visits. Their tactic, known as the "Grandparent Scam," involves pretending to be a grandchild in desperate need of money to get out of trouble. They spin fictional tales about being in jail, behind on bills, or needing emergency funds. The scammers then pressure grandparents to immediately wire money or provide gift card numbers. In some disturbing recent cases, scammers have started showing up at seniors' homes posing as lawyers collecting bail money for a supposedly jailed grandchild. If you receive any suspicious calls or visitors requesting money for a grandchild or other relative, contact your police department immediately before providing any funds. We must warn all residents about these shameful scams targeting loving grandparents in our community. Staying alert and verified can protect you and your family from fraud.

Scheming North Shore Insurance Agent Sentenced for $1M Annuity Scam

A former Kenilworth insurance agent has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for defrauding over 18 victims out of more than $1 million in annuity premiums. Beginning in 2016, Daniel M. Rosenbaum pocketed payments for annuities he never actually secured for clients. He created fake documents with copied insurer logos to dupe customers into thinking they had active policies.

Beyond selling bogus annuities, Rosenbaum a Wisconsin resident, exploited federal COVID-19 business aid programs and state unemployment funds through false applications, netting him over $100,000 in additional ill-gotten gains. According to prosecutors, while enriching himself, Rosenbaum left clients uninsured and facing substantial financial hardship.

Earlier this week Rosenbaum pled guilty to wire fraud charges brought by the U.S. Attorney's Office and FBI. The judge handed down the 7-year sentence in a Chicago courtroom.

Spread Kindness on National Random Acts of Kindness Day, February 17

This annual holiday, celebrated since 1995, encourages people to perform thoughtful gestures to make the world a little better. Created by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, it provides a timely reminder of the power of kindness.

The idea is straightforward - on February 17, make an extra effort to express kindness through small but meaningful actions. Hold the door for someone, pay a compliment, call a friend you haven't spoken to in awhile, or pick up litter in your neighborhood. With over 30 years of momentum, Random Acts of Kindness Day has blossomed into a worldwide celebration of our shared humanity.

The holiday presents a valuable opportunity to instill the habit of generosity. A little kindness goes a long way towards brightening someone's day and strengthening communal bonds. Just as showing compassion becomes easier with practice, small acts can snowball into significant social change over time. This February 17, spread some kindness in your corner of the world.
