Avoca Parents Frustrated Over Potential School Closure and Rebuild

Parents in Glenview, Illinois expressed anger over a proposed $89.8 million bond referendum by the Avoca School District 37 board. The plan would close down Avoca West Elementary and rebuild it in Wilmette. Parents oppose losing their neighborhood school and facing a 25-year tax hike. For a $600,000 home, taxes would rise $1,772 yearly, totaling over $44,000. A group called Concerned Residents of Avoca District 37 said questions remain unanswered while the board pushes its narrative ahead of the March 19 vote. Over 100 parents now oppose the referendum. The board scheduled open houses at Avoca West on March 5 and 6, to address concerns over the school's uncertain future.

LONDON: Fine Dining Behind Bars: Brixton Prison's Surprise Gourmet Gem

Hidden away in a converted governor's house within the walls of Brixton Prison is a surprising gourmet dining gem - The Clink Restaurant. With over 1,160 five-star TripAdvisor reviews, this small chain of restaurants located inside UK prisons strives to provide an upscale foodie experience while serving as on-the-job training for inmates nearing the end of their sentences.

To enter The Clink, visitors undergo airport-style security checks, surrendering phones and accessories before proceeding into the Victorian-style dining room situated in the center of the prison's courtyard. The waitstaff team is comprised entirely of uniformed inmates working towards qualifications in hospitality and food service to aid post-release employment opportunities.

The seasonal prix fixe Sunday lunch menu offers starters like smoked trout rillettes with apple and rye crackers. Elegant mains feature classics like roast beef and pork belly served with sides like giant Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes. To finish, tangy sorbets provide a bright, flavorful contrast to the indulgent courses that come before.

Far from the rushed dining experiences found elsewhere in London, The Clink provides an opportunity for meaningful connections without distraction from mobile devices. In this unique restaurant space, attentive yet relaxed servers guide guests through a carefully prepared dining experience focused on redemption through meaningful work. Leaving the outside world behind, even just for a few hours, changes perspectives and opens new possibilities. More Info Here

Woman Charged With Human Trafficking And Involuntary Servitude After Four Victims Rescued In Highland Park

Lake County authorities have charged Gladys Ibanez Olea, 34, with multiple felony counts related to human trafficking and involuntary servitude. An investigation began in late January after Highland Park police received a tip about potential trafficking at Olea's home.

A search this month led to the rescue of two women, ages 19 and 22, the 19-year-old's 2-year-old son, and the 22-year-old's 15-year-old brother. Authorities say Olea had arranged to bring the four victims from Mexico under false pretenses of providing housing, jobs and safety. Instead, she took their identification and money, forced them into jobs, locked up food, controlled their movement, and threatened their families to make them comply.

Olea has been detained pending further court hearings. The victims have been relocated and are receiving services. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

FTC Sues to Block Kroger's $24.6B Acquisition of Albertsons Over Antitrust Concerns

The Federal Trade Commission sued to block Kroger's proposed $24.6 billion acquisition of Albertsons, alleging the merger would be anticompetitive and lead to higher grocery prices, lower quality products and services, and fewer choices for consumers. Albertsons operates stores under banners including Jewel-Osco, Safeway and Vons. The FTC says Kroger and Albertsons are direct competitors and the merger would create a "monopoly in grocery."

To try to get merger approval, Kroger and Albertsons proposed divesting some stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers, but the FTC alleges this is an "inadequate" solution that ignores many regional markets where the chains currently compete.

The FTC claims that if the merger happens, it would remove competition that is necessary for Kroger and Albertsons to keep lowering prices and improving quality. This could lead to higher grocery prices and lower product quality and customer service.

The FTC also alleges the merged company would have increased leverage over workers and unions, likely resulting in worse wages, benefits and working conditions for grocery store workers. Nine state attorneys general have joined the FTC's federal lawsuit to block the merger.
