Unlock Endless Possibilities with 3 Exciting Course Modifications at New Trier Highschool

During a recent board of education meeting at New Trier High School, three course modifications were proposed. The assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, Peter Tragos, explained that this is the time of year when new courses and modifications are presented to the board for approval. All three proposed modifications are for existing courses. One proposed modification is for the urban design class, which was approved in 2022. Tragos suggested making the class interdisciplinary by combining it with the school's existing civics class. The social studies teachers noticed similarities between the curricula, making this connection natural. Students who take this course will also receive credit for their civics graduation requirement.

Another proposed course is new media arts, a revision of the existing freshman media production class. Tragos mentioned that this class has had low enrollment in recent years. The updated curriculum will include digital media, incorporating social media and content creation. Students can choose to take new media arts for a full school year or just one semester.

The third proposal is a level change for the existing leadership in art essentials class, which is currently an elective. Tragos explained that students who take this course act as teacher's assistants in art classes, helping with curriculum planning and working with other students. The proposed change would reclassify it as an honors-level course.

The board is expected to vote on these proposals in November. Additionally, Tragos discussed New Trier's approach to future curriculum planning. The district aims to design programming for the next decade that is more flexible and individualized for student opportunities and experiences. A committee will be formed to study future programming, with input from parents, students, and staff. The board will be kept informed of any developments, including the possibility of offering more language options in the modern and classical languages department.

Join in the Grand Reopening of Winnetka Playground

Jake Claybrook, a member of Troop 18 and former Winnetka Park District Commissioner Teresa Claybook's son, successfully sent the Nick Corwin playground's old equipment to West Africa as part of his Eagle Scout project, allowing children in Ghana to experience a playground for the first time.

Nick Corwin Park, which was acquired from Winnetka School District 36 in 1953, has now been updated with new playground equipment to meet modern safety standards.

On the final day of construction, the community gathered to witness the completion of their new playground and share in the joy of giving children the opportunity to experience playing on a playground for the first time.

Express Metra Train Strikes and Kills Woman in North Chicago

A 57-year-old woman, Christina Egidi from Grayslake, was tragically killed by a Metra train at the North Chicago train station on Lakeside Ave. She was attempting to cross the tracks, believing the train was stopping. This incident happened around 9 a.m, and she was declared dead at the scene. The autopsy report stated the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

The train involved, No. 320, was scheduled to leave Highland Park for Chicago at 8:30 a.m. according to the Union Pacific North Line schedule. However, the departure was delayed due to positive train control issues. Metra had arranged for train No. 324 to operate before No. 320 to serve its passengers just prior to the accident.

The Metra Police Department and the Lake County Coroner’s Office are continuing their investigations into the incident.

Settlement Reached in Case of Teenager Shot by Des Plaines Officer, City Pays $1.9 Million

In what appears to be a case of mistaken identity, Rylan Wilder, a promising young musician, was accidentally shot by Officer Armstrong during a police operation against a bank robber, Willis. The incident resulted in severe injuries to Wilder's left arm, requiring 18 surgeries and years of physical therapy, and still left him with no feeling in the affected limb. Despite these setbacks, Wilder has shown remarkable resilience, adapting his style of play, and continuing to pursue his musical aspirations, including producing a new track, "Ribbon Graveyard" by Love Buggy.

On the legal front, Wilder's family received a $1.9 million settlement from the city of Des Plaines, although the city officials did not admit any wrongdoing and defended Officer Armstrong's actions as justified under the circumstances. Officer Armstrong was also cleared of any wrongdoing and continues to serve in the police force. The settlement does not reflect a culpability admission, but it does highlight the significant impact of the incident on Wilder's life and future.
