Wilmette Rotary Club Refocuses Vocational Scholarships

The Rotary Club of Wilmette has reshaped its vocational scholarship program after finding that wealthy past recipients often didn't cash their scholarship checks. Now 15 scholarships worth $1,500 each are being offered specifically to financially-needy students pursuing vocational careers in Chicago's north, northwest and western suburbs. Interested qualifying students can apply online here for the Rotary/Friedman Foundation scholarships by early March.

Yellow Line Train Service Resumes After Safety Upgrades Made Post-Crash

Nearly two months after a train collided with a snowplow injuring 40 people near the Howard station, the CTA Yellow Line train service resumed early Friday morning. The CTA implemented safety upgrades like reduced speeds, rail power-washing, and new communication protocols before reopening. They made the changes voluntarily and continue working with the NTSB investigation. Key upgrades include 35 mph speed limits, manually blocking rails to non-transport vehicles, added communication between control center and vehicles on tracks, and supervision on initial Yellow Line runs. The CTA says safety is the top priority and they wanted to thoroughly examine operations before reopening.

Influx Strains Wilmette And Other Chicago Suburbs

The influx of undocumented migrants into Chicago's suburbs persisted this past week as three buses dropped off 148 passengers in Wilmette, further burdening infrastructure and transit. The migrants were scheduled to take the Metra into downtown Chicago, increasing strain on transportation according to Emergency Management. Officials expect daily immigrant bus arrivals around Illinois to continue into March, often exceeding initial projections. As migrants keep flooding suburbs, leaders attempt coordinating responses to address strains on local services and resources causing resident concerns. Suburban police are handling these growing immigrant buses numbers.
