Jail Kitchen Transformed into Acclaimed Pizza Shop and Arts Program

The basement of a Cook County Jail division that once served inmate meals is now a renowned pizza kitchen and arts program called Recipe for Change. Founded by celebrity chef Bruno Abate, owner of Tocco in Winnetka. The program offers culinary and art certifications to inmates to help them avoid returning to jail. With donated funds, they are launching a food truck employing a dozen former inmates. The program has expanded over the years and now includes 4,000 alumni. The chef aspires to see jail kitchens empty, as the ultimate objective is to provide second chances and help inmates maintain a positive mindset. Full Story & Podcast Can Be Found Here

Winnetka Passes Ordinance To Regulate Unscheduled Migrant Drop-Offs

The Winnetka Village Council unanimously approved an ordinance to prohibit unscheduled one-way buses from dropping off 10 or more migrant passengers. Buses must now apply for advanced approval, provide information on the number of passengers and driver, and can only drop passengers off on weekdays between 10am-4pm within a 30-minute window at the Indian Hill Metra station parking lot. Penalties include fines up to $750 per passenger. Winnetka joins 36 other Chicago suburbs who have passed similar regulations following an influx of migrant buses arriving from Texas. Officials said the rules aim to ensure proper treatment, health and safety of migrants and residents.
